Introduction

Sketchbook is a raster graphics software application first developed by Alias Systems Corporation to then get acquired and released by Autodesk in 2008. It’s one of the most popular sketching tools within a wide variety of industries and became freeware in 2019. If you want to take your sketching to the next level, be sure to read on!

Features

Available for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, the application features an amazingly useful new interface; it pretty much gets out of your way and only appears at the sides if you want to change anything regarding the tools you’re using at the time. That’s just convenient, as it opens up more space and lets artists draw without any barriers, just like they were doing it on real paper.

Navigating with stylus, fingers, or combining both with gestures is a breeze in this user interface. Also, the 100 megapixels canvas and the unlimited amount of allowed layers grant the most amount of freedom ever seen in an application of this kind. The basic features include everything you would expect from a painting and sketching piece of software, but the advanced features are what separate this behemoth from the rest of the similar applications available in the market.

First of all, the brushes; Sketchbook features 140 different brushes created by some of the best artists and designers in the industry. They’re all carefully designed to work as they’d do on real paper no matter the type. Watercolor brushes, pastels, markers, and a really cool pencil set are all part of the package. On top of that, Sketchbook’s new textured brushes add a new dimension to your drawings.

The guide tools are catered towards industrial designers, architects, and engineers who need to have perfect measurements in their sketches. The ellipse tool, the radial symmetry feature, a cool ruler, and even advanced perspective guidelines to guide you through your sketch are all available and really useful when used properly.
Sketchbook’s stroke stabilizer will help tremendously when you want to quickly draft things and want lines to be perfect. You don’t like how the drawing is looking? Turn it off and see how you’re actually drawing it; a real workflow enhancer.

Sketchbook’s symmetry tools let artists draw only one side of any design and the other half will be cloned by the program. The results are amazing and the workflow enhancement is profitable at least. The fill tools have more control than the ones seen in other applications. It’s easy to fill anything with multiple blending colors in a linear or radial gradient. Other features including distort transform, brush blending, enhanced selection tools, flipbook animations, and a Copic color library complete this robust piece of software.

Highlights

Autodesk decided to release Sketchbook as a freeware application since April 30, 2019. Users who already bought it before will change to the new individual free version and new users won’t have to pay anything for the full application. There is a premium plan especially designed for enterprises and larger workgroups.

The Premium plan will work on all devices and will obviously support several users at a time. The monthly fee is sitting at $10, the 1-year license costs $85, and the 3-year license costs $230. It uses standard Autodesk licensing and will grant access to their customer support.

Conclusion

Autodesk Sketchbook is hands down the best painting and sketching application in the market right now. If you want to get creative with your tablet or you’re an artist who wants to go digital, download it and try it; if you, on the other hand, are a working graphic designer, you probably know about this software anyway.
